In 1994, Nord-Trøndelag University College (HiNT) was formed by a merger of four educational institutions with their own cultures and traditions. The merger led to internal tensions that came to characterize the newly-established university college: 1) geographic conflicts of interest, 2) tensions between professional education and more academically oriented studies, 3) old and new systems for assessing and funding of research, and 4) various justifications of the university college’s profile and study portfolio.
The article provides knowledge of the making of HiNT as an institution, but also sheds light on some more general processes and developments in the higher education sector in Norway during the last twenty years. HiNT clarifies many of the traits that has characterized the Norwegian education history in this period. Thus, HiNT’s history may serve as a case that highlights the effect of national reforms on small and medium-sized institutions. Keywords: History of education, university, university college, Nord-Trøndelag University College, Nord University
