Abstract

Has coverage of minorities in the Norwegian press moved from a static biology discourse rooted in racial thinking to a more dynamic discourse based on environmental and cultural factors? Based on a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles from the period 1902–2010, we show that press coverage early in the period frequently refers to biological aspects of minorities, while environmental and cultural factors increase in the later period. References to minorities culture in the final period, however, are among the most static, while early reference to skin complexion, etc., is less static than pure race-based thinking would suggest.

Abstract

The introduction of a new medium leads to adaptation of the existing media, but the relation between the new and the old changes over time. Following different phases in the development of a health and lifestyle programme (PULS), this article analyses changes that have taken place in the relationship between television and the internet in the past decade. While the possibilities of the internet were used in the first phase to enhance the television concept, the internet has gained more independence in the recent phase. Online health and lifestyle journalists are no longer integrated in Puls’s television activity, but with NRK’s general online activity focusing on their front page. This development changes the hierarchical relation between these media that has become more equal.

Abstract

This is an analysis of the public debate around Anders Behring Breivik’s use of computer games before his terrorist attack in Norway on 22 July 2011. The claim that computer games have been formative for the terrorist has led to criticism of these games, some of it with strong emotional power but with short-term consequences only. With this debate as vantage point, the article critically discusses the concept «media panic». The analysis shows that the debate about computer games after 22 July includes aspects not covered by the traditional understanding of media panic and that many of the criteria generally associated with this concept are absent.
