In the years 1935–1946, Hannah Ryggen positioned herself as a critical and anti-fascistic voice on the Norwegian art scene with her political tapestries. Anti-fascism becomes a framework in which artistic and political strategies are synthesized into a symbiosis of form and content. Within this symbiosis, iconographic devices such as satire, caricature, the grotesque, the uncanny, redescriptions, inversions and double exposures are essential.

This article discusses how reenactment practices are appropriated in Jeremy Deller’s The Battle of Orgreave, which aims to investigate a key site of historical and cultural memory. The following set of questions has guided the research: In what ways do artistic historical reenactments draw on and differ from the folk tradition of historical reenactments? What happens when memory is reenacted as an art project? Are there any restrictions on what can be presented, and by whom?

Mark Rothko had a strong sense of the interplay between paintings and their beholders. One could say that the act of viewing becomes part of his works. This article studies the way his images make possible this interaction through a certain dialectic between revelation and concealment, where the visibility of the image alludes in an unexpected way to something unrepresented.
